Event Data Recorders

Most new vehicles are equipped with Event Data Recorders (EDRs) or “Black Box” devices that record data immediately before, during and after a crash.

Data may also be stored by other devices on a vehicle such as GPS, infotainment and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). We use several tools to access and download the data recorded in passenger vehicles, heavy trucks and other vehicle types during a crash event. Depending on the vehicle manufacturer and model year, the data recorded may include the following:

Pre-Crash Data:

  • Vehicle Indicated Speed
  • Accelerator Pedal (% Full)
  • Engine Throttle (% Full)
  • Engine Speed (RPM)
  • Brake Switch Status (On/Off)
  • ABS & Stability Control Activity
  • Steering Input (% or Degrees)
  • Tire Pressure (psi)

System Status at Event:

  • Seat Belt Status (Driver & Right Front)
  • Airbag Warning Lamp (On/Off)
  • Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

Crash Data:

  • Longitudinal & Lateral Speed Change
  • Longitudinal & Lateral Acceleration
