Most new vehicles are equipped with Event Data Recorders (EDRs) or “Black Box” devices that record data immediately before, during and after a crash.
Data may also be stored by other devices on a vehicle such as GPS, infotainment and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). We use several tools to access and download the data recorded in passenger vehicles, heavy trucks and other vehicle types during a crash event. Depending on the vehicle manufacturer and model year, the data recorded may include the following:
Pre-Crash Data:
- Vehicle Indicated Speed
- Accelerator Pedal (% Full)
- Engine Throttle (% Full)
- Engine Speed (RPM)
- Brake Switch Status (On/Off)
- ABS & Stability Control Activity
- Steering Input (% or Degrees)
- Tire Pressure (psi)
System Status at Event:
- Seat Belt Status (Driver & Right Front)
- Airbag Warning Lamp (On/Off)
- Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
Crash Data:
- Longitudinal & Lateral Speed Change
- Longitudinal & Lateral Acceleration
